Pet Ultrasound

Ultrasound detects issues in your pet’s soft tissues and confirms exciting pregnancies.

Unlike X-rays, which provide a static image of bones and dense structures, ultrasound for cats and dogs at Redlands Animal Hospital creates detailed images of soft tissues for a unique view of your pet’s health. Our skilled team uses this non-invasive technology to provide thorough, compassionate care for your pet in Redlands, CA.

How Does Veterinary Ultrasound Technology Work?

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of your pet’s internal organs. A small, handheld device called a transducer is held against your pet’s body. This device emits sound waves that bounce off tissues and organs. The waves are then converted into images that appear on a screen, allowing our veterinarians to see soft tissues and fluid buildup.

Ultrasound Pregnancy Scans for Your Pet

One of the most common uses for ultrasound in veterinary medicine is to monitor pregnancy. Ultrasound can confirm a pregnancy and provide valuable information about fetal development, health, and even the estimated number of puppies or kittens. For expectant pet owners, pregnancy ultrasounds offer peace of mind and important insights as our veterinarians track the progress of the pregnancy and address any concerns that may arise. We typically suggest that you schedule a pet pregnancy ultrasound 20-30 days after breeding for accurate results.

Other Reasons Pets May Need an Ultrasound

Ultrasound can be used to diagnose health issues and conditions in pets beyond pregnancy. Common reasons that your companion might need a pet ultrasound include:

Abdominal Concerns

Ultrasound can evaluate the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, and intestines, providing detailed information if your pet is experiencing digestive issues, abdominal pain, or other related symptoms.

Fluid Buildup

Ultrasound can identify fluid accumulation in the chest or abdomen, which may indicate infections, trauma, or other medical conditions.

Tumors or Masses

Ultrasound is often used to detect and evaluate masses, helping determine their size, location, and potential impact on surrounding tissues.

Your Pet’s Ultrasound Appointment

During an ultrasound appointment, our team will take steps to keep your pet comfortable and relaxed. We will start by shaving a small area of your pet’s fur to allow the transducer to make proper contact with the skin. A special gel is applied to help transmit the sound waves, and the transducer is moved over the area being examined. Most pets tolerate the procedure very well. Although rarely needed, if a pet is particularly anxious and unable to remain still, mild sedation may be recommended to ensure they stay calm and still for clear imaging.

Once the images are captured, our veterinarians will review the results with you, discuss any findings, and recommend the next steps for your pet’s care. Pet ultrasound results are available immediately. In the rare case that we believe the results should be reviewed by a specialist for additional analysis, that will be discussed with you.

If your pet’s symptoms or health concerns require detailed imaging, ultrasound may be the right choice.
